Es uno de los más modernos sistemas de imagen médica, combina un método de Medicina Nuclear (PET) con la Tomografía Computada (CT). Ofrece imágenes que permiten ver a los médicos el funcionamiento del organismo humano y la medición de sus procesos químicos y biológicos.
Es un examen médico de imagen no invasivo, combina radiaciones ionizantes en dosis bajas con computadoras sofisticadas para producir imágenes de alta resolución que posteriormente, se analizan en múltiples planos (3D).
En la resonancia magnética (RM), se utilizan poderosos imanes y una computadora para detectar el campo magnético de los átomos, sin usar radiación ionizante. Es por lo tanto seguro para pacientes de todas las edades, e incluso es adecuado para estudiar al bebé en una paciente embarazada. Las imágenes pueden obtener en cualquier plano del eje del cuerpo del paciente y en diferentes secuencias que nos permiten ver la diferencia entre diferentes secuencias.
La mastografía permite la detección temprana del cáncer de mama; sus recientes avances incluyen la técnica digital y la tomosíntesis, que es una técnica avanzada de imagen de la mama en tercera dimensión.
